Starfield is an action role-playing video game set in an open world within the Milky Way galaxy. The game allows the player to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. They can explore over 1,000 planets, along with moons and space stations. Procedurally generate the landscapes and then enhance them with handcrafted content. The game generates terrain, alien flora and fauna, and points of interest based on the star and atmosphere of each planet. The largest city, New Atlantis, is a fictional creation by Bethesda. As the player explores, they interact with non-playable characters (NPCs) who may join their crew. NPCs can assist in combat, carry items, and engage in conversations. Some NPCs respond to the player’s choices. The player can build outposts and assign crew members. Each companion has unique skills and can be romanced.
At the start, the player customizes their character, choosing body type, appearance, background, and traits. Backgrounds unlock starting skills. The player earns experience and levels up, unlocking abilities in five skill trees: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech. You can customize weapons, including firearms and melee weapons, with attachments. Jetpacks aid in combat and traversal. Gravity varies depending on celestial bodies, affecting combat. Players can scan planets for resources and use them in crafting recipes. They can construct outposts with laboratories to research items and upgrades in different categories.
