Published:

The PlayStation VR2 (also known as PS VR2) is a virtual reality headset designed for the PlayStation 5 gaming system. Sony Interactive Entertainment created it and made it available for purchase on February 22, 2023. The PS VR2 allows players to immerse themselves in virtual reality experiences while using the PlayStation 5 console.

PlayStation PS VR2 Development History

PS VR2 took around six years to develop. It was created at the same time as the PlayStation 5, with the goal of achieving a perfect combination of a console and a virtual reality device.

Before the release of PS VR2, an analyst from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) said that the upcoming VR headset would have the highest pixel density on a commercial OLED panel, with a pixel density of over 800 PPI.

Sony announced the PlayStation VR2 for the PlayStation 5 at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show.

On November 2, 2022, the official PlayStation Blog revealed that the release date would be February 22, 2023, and the retail price would be $549.99.

According to Bloomberg, Sony lowered its projections for the initial launch due to disappointing pre-orders. However, Sony denied reducing production numbers and stated they were seeing enthusiasm from PlayStation fans for the upcoming launch.

PlayStation PS VR2 Games and content

Developers are creating over 100 games for PS VR2, with more than 40 set to be available at its launch. Some of the games include Resident Evil Village, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2, No Man’s Sky, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, Demeo, Moss and Moss: Book II remasters, and PS VR2 exclusives Horizon Call of the Mountain and The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR. Gran Turismo 7 and Beat Saber will also be available for PS VR2.

Gran Turismo 7 works well with the PS VR2, except for the 2-player splitscreen feature. The previous game, Gran Turismo Sport, didn’t have good support for the original PS VR headset.

The PS VR2 doesn’t work with PS VR games from the previous generation because the controllers and image display technology are different. Developers are updating their PS VR games to work on the new system.

During a Sony developers conference, they mentioned that Sony intends to create “hybrid” VR games for the new headset. These games will be similar to those where you have the option to play in VR or not, like Hitman 3, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and No Man’s Sky.
